We may not start our diets until next Monday, but there are plenty of ways that we can start saving money instantly.
Research suggests that even though millennials are not spending all their savings on avocado and poached eggs on toast, around 66% of millennials have zero savings for retirement in what is tipped to be a future retirement crisis.
A younger generation with limited savings is arguably the result of being dealt a bad hand, entering the workforce during a recession. Nevertheless, there are ways they can turn things around by adopting the best tips for saving money.
#1: Stop Buying Designer Coffees
Easier said than done? Actually, it is really easy. After all, we didn’t say kick your caffeine habit to the curb now did we. Buying a flask and filling it up at home is one of the most effective ways of avoiding the craving of a pricey cup of coffee on your way to work.
Some people only spend money on coffee because cafés are a great place to meet friends and socialise. That’s true, but if you and your friends all buy flasks together, you can go and meet up in parks and in nature instead. A flask is also a great way to keep overfilled water in the kettle hot for your next cup – saving you on electricity bills!
#2: Start Shopping at Markets
In the modern age, it is all too easy to have our groceries turn up at our front door. Paying a little extra for delivery is not a bad idea as this may cut down your own fuel expenses and balance out – depending on the details.
However, shopping for fruit and vegetables at markets is usually much cheaper than shopping at the chain supermarkets. This is because you are cutting out the middleman and buying directly from farmers. You can always make a Sunday morning out of it with friends and then grab a coffee from your flasks in the park afterwards!
#3: Use Bill Switcher Services
Renters and homeowners have plenty of websites to hand that will offer to check out the competition for gas and electricity providers in their area. In the UK, the government has stated that most homes could save around £200 each year by using switcher services. Yet, many of us still stick with our current – and more expensive – provider out of convenience.
By going out of our way for an hour, we could continue to find the best and cheapest provider for our homes, and more importantly, save money for months. Stop putting it off and get researching, today!
