An above ground pool sets on a concrete pad in the backyard on a sunny summer day.

Over 10 million American households have a pool to stay fit and cool during the summer.

Although swimming pools conjure fun memories, they also require regular maintenance. Perhaps you’ve recently built an above ground pool and you’re not sure how to look after it.

Sounds familiar? Luckily, we’re here to help. Here are our five above-ground pool cleaning tips.

  1. Test Your Water Regularly

One of the most important tips for cleaning an above-ground pool is to regularly test the water. This is because weather, chemicals, and how frequently you use your pool affects the pH. Note that this should be between 7.2 and 7.6.

You must also consider the pool’s alkalinity and sanitizer level which can be altered by adding special chemicals.

  1. Clean the Filter

“How do I clean an above-ground pool quickly?”

Regularly clean the filter as it is critical to keeping your pool clean. You can do this by “backwashing” your filter as it prevents a buildup of debris. Many models have a built-in mode but if yours doesn’t, you must manually empty or replace the filter.

Further, clean the pool’s walls and floor with natural cleaning solutions. If not, there will be a buildup of copper or even algae which will stain your pool.

  1. Winterize Your Swimming Pool

On your maintenance checklist for above-ground pools, add “winterize”. Make sure you balance the pool, add winterizing chemicals to the water, and deep-clean it with an Intex maintenance kit

Then cover the pool with an air pillow as it absorbs freezing temperatures and protects your pool’s cover and walls.

  1. Check the Pump

Not sure how to keep an above-ground pool clean?

Make sure your pump runs for at least eight hours every day. The water must be constantly circulating otherwise algae may bloom on the surface. Plus, moving water directs debris into the filter so the pool stays clear.

If you’re struggling, invest in a pool vacuum and use it once a week.

  1. Do Weekly Shock Treatments

An important part of above-ground pool maintenance is to shock the water. This is where you add a concentrated amount of chlorine to remove chloramines and excess bacteria.

Slowly sprinkle powdered shock around the edges so the water can properly absorb it. Next, add a water clarifier and distribute the solution with a pool brush so the entire area is covered.

Wait for 15 minutes and make sure the shock hasn’t sunk to the bottom. If it has, keep stirring with the brush until it dissolves.

That’s Everything About Above Ground Pool Cleaning

Hopefully, after reading this article, you now know everything about above ground pool cleaning.

Make sure you regularly test the water, clean your filters, and keep the pump running eight hours a day. You should also do weekly shock treatments and always winterize your pool so it’s in great condition. Good luck!
