BMW K1600 GTL: BMW’s comfortable touring bike

BMW Motorrad believes in full-dress, American tour bikes, and the K1600 GTL leads the pack. It has been built keeping in mind luxury comfort while also focusing on safety. It comes loaded to the gills with features and gadgets along with an engine that offers flat-six performance, putting it bang in the power-tourer segment. The factory has also given it the ‘Spezial’ treatment that includes factory-custom finishing to give it an extra dose of exclusivity.

Engine

Packed neatly within the frame is a 1649cc, six-cylinder engine that produces 158bhp and 175Nm of torque. The BMW K1600 GTL is BSIV-compliant.

Specifications

The K1600 GTL is a huge bike with a lot of road presence. It gets a vast fairing at the front with a vented windshield that helps reduce head-buffet. It also sports a large xenon headlamp that gets self-leveling tech. There is also a pair of driving lights that help split the light. The indicators at the front are mounted at the inboard corners of the cowl scoop along with a set of DRL rings. It gets a massive, muscular fuel tank that looks like it belongs on a sports bike. And the seat height can be adjusted to all various types of riders. The instrument cluster includes a pair of circular analogue gauges for the speedometer and tachometer, while it also gets an LCD multi-function display. The digital display in the middle features a gear position indicator, clock, odometer, trip meter, fuel level and riding modes. In terms of dimensions, the K1600 GTL is 2489mm in length, 1000mm in width and 1465mm in height. Various riding modes come with the stock equipment package that allows you to adjust the power delivery based on the condition. Power is transmitted through a 6-speed transmission that uses helical-cut gears, which helps make it smoother and stronger. The exhaust system consists of a three-way catalytic converter that burns any remaining hydrocarbons in the exhaust system. At 332kgs, the bike feels quite heavy. The ground clearance, on the other hand, is 146mm, while the bike has a wheelbase of 1680mm and a seat height of 750mm.

Mechanical Parts

The seating on the GTL is very comfortable for both, the rider and the pillion. The wide, deep chair adds to the experience and the pillion has to step up a little to be seated at the rear. The top case doubles up as a backrest along with wide, fold-up foot pegs. When it comes to ride quality, it uses the factory’s Dynamic ESA system that electronically keeps a tab on vehicle attitude and riding conditions so it can automatically adjust its damper settings for the best comfort. The tyres offers loads of grip, and can handle almost anything. Thanks to the ABS Pro, the brakes perform remarkably well. The bike tackles corners impressively too and is very agile. At the front, the bike rides on Duolever suspension, while the rear gets a cast aluminium single-sided swing arm. The K1600 GTL runs on 120/70 ZR17 tyres at the front and 190/55 ZR17 tyres at the rear. Retardation duties are taken care of by disc brakes at the front and at the rear.
