A container is one of the four types of packaging which are receptacles and protect, hold and organize materials and products in the storage as well as during the transportation. There are different types of containers such as bags, drums, barrels, cases, cartons etc. Usually, containers are made out of corrugated cardboard, metal including aluminium and steel, welded wire mesh, HDPE or high-density polyethylene, corrugated plastic etc. The HDPE is commonly used in making returnable and reusable containers. There are three basic and common types of reusable containers namely the bin, tote, and bulk container. The bin is normally a box where small parts are kept before assembly and manufacturing. The bin is usually stackable with a tab at the back which is meant for hanging the bin from a storage unit. The bins are generally made out of corrugated or solid plastic. The bins are often seen in working units at a place and commonly never get removed from the place. The normal dimension of a bin varies from 24 x 12 inches to 3 x 3 inches.
The tote has several names and called as crate, handheld container, handheld, work in process tote, reusable security container etc. The tote is box often with handles that are moulded-in. There are three styles of totes such as the stackable tote, nest-able tote, and stack and nest tote. The nest-able totes have sloppy sidewalls featuring from the base footprint which is smaller in comparison to the top opening. This helps in nesting the totes in keeping them inside each other when they are empty. On the other hand, the stackable totes have footprints on the bottom as well as on the top along with an integrated lip which when stacked prevents shifting. The nest and stacktotes can be nested and stalked in a combination of 90 as well as 180 degrees.
The bulk container also popularly called as bulk bin, bulk box, Gaylord, shipping container etc. are the larger reusable boxes. The bulk container has four straight walls with openings on four sides or two sides. When empty the sidewalls of the bulk container normally collapse inside the container and in some bulk container it does not collapse depending on the design. There may be drop doors or opening doors of a bulk container based on the design.
